I got to do a little interview with a lovely lady of "Borrowed & Blue" which is a wedding website dedicated to housing all of the details you need for whichever U.S. city in which you plan to get married!
And here's what they had to say:
“Borrowed & Blue loves local, and thinks your wedding should reflect the flavors of the city you’re getting hitched in (so those of you in the midst of planning your Birmingham weddings, listen up). What better place to start than the most stylish gal in the city? Obviously, we’re talking about Kenslie McGuire. One look at her, and you’ll realize why she was our go-to on all things Birmingham. We love her style, and we know you will too—so sit back and get ready to glean some serious cool tips.”
Tell us a little about yourself. Describe your aesthetic in four words.
I’m Kenslie! Born and raised here in the south, I’ve got a passion for design and photography! I’m the art director and photographer for Soca Clothing based out of Birmingham, AL. Nothing can stop me from trying out new breakfast spots and wandering around town looking for photo ops in my favorite new duds. I’d say my overall life aesthetic would be classic, enchanting, retro, and American.
What’s the general Birmingham fashion scene like? How do you think your style differs?
I wouldn’t put Birmingham on the map as the fashion capital of the south by any means, but we’re definitely trying! With the rejuvenation of our downtown scene, we are becoming more fashion forward. Right now, most of the “fashion” sense comes from the suburbs where style tips are taken straight from the rack. I’d say that my style differs because I shop from so many different places that it becomes more curated, yet still casual.
Your fashion is killer. Where do you shop for clothes locally?
I’ll be honest and say I do most of my shopping online these days! When I’m needing a little retail therapy though, I usually make my rounds at Soca Clothing, Forever 21, Gap, and Urban Outfitters.
What about shoes?
Once again, I’ve really been making use of my online stores for shoes, but I’ve had some serious luck at Gap and Soca in the shoe category recently!
Jewelry?
Soca Clothing. I know, I’m a little partial, but they run great sales on their designer jewelry, and I tend to make use of them!
Make up?
One day I’ll make the switch into fancy makeup, but for now, I’m still a drugstore makeup gal. You can’t beat the Revlon Lip Stains.
Where are your favorite spots to hang in Bham?
I love walking to the Habitat at the Grand Bohemian to play pool and get appetizers! It’s a fancy place to hang and just enjoy time with friends! We love to go to Railroad Park, Avondale, and Sloss Furnace on lovely days and just enjoy the fresh air and scenery.
You’re also a photographer. What do you think are the most beautiful spots in Birmingham to photograph?
Gosh. What a loaded question! Parking decks are always my go-to when I need human focused photos. The light right before sunset is perfect and you get a wonderful city scape in the background! The Birmingham Botanical Gardens rarely disappoints. We have the lovely Alabama Theatre and now the Lyric which both make for a fun backdrop. Sloss Furnace that I mentioned earlier makes for a great photo-op as well! It’s a huge park so every turn of a corner is whole new scene!
For someone visiting Birmingham for a weekend, what would you suggest they do? What are the must-see, must-do, and must-eat spots?
If you’re like me and need a photo-op everywhere you go, coffee at Saturn Birmingham is a must! It’s a retro, sixties, space race inspired coffee shop, bar, and venue. Niki’s West is my all time favorite restaurant in Birmingham. It’s a meat and three, cafeteria style place that will blow your mind! If you’re looking for a place to wear your fancy shoes, check out Bamboo on Second, Babalu, and Jackson’s Bar and Bistro. The new Woodlawn Cycle Cafe is a coffee shop with some delicate snacks and the atmosphere is to die for!
And finally, what advice would you give to someone navigating the streets of Birmingham for the first time?
Keep your eyes open and your ears tuned! There are new gems developing all over downtown Birmingham every month!
